The Greater Capital Area Association of Realtors (GCAAR) has started an advocacy campaign to oppose County Executive Marc Elrich’s ten percent property tax hike.

Yesterday afternoon, GCAAR sent out the following mass text.

*****

Marc Elrich and the Montgomery County Council want to add hundreds of dollars to our property tax bills to fund his $6.8 billion spending spree.

The costs of gas, groceries, and housing are already out of control, and this tax hike will only make things worse for all of us — especially seniors and struggling families.

Zac Trupp, GCAAR’s Government Affairs Director, told me, “GCAAR is planning to make our members’ voices heard to encourage the Council to reject the County Executive’s fiscally irresponsible property tax increase.  Throughout the past two weeks we have been mobilizing our members, industry partners and consumers through emails, calls, ads and more – and we plan to continue this approach to make sure the Council hears the opposition loud and clear.”

The realtors are one of the most politically active groups in the county’s business community.  Their PAC often spends six digits or more promoting their endorsed candidates at election time.  Combine that capacity with the sure unpopularity of a large tax hike among many residents and they could exert some real pressure on the county council.
