The Maryland State Education Association (MSEA), the largest teachers union in Maryland, has announced its support for Congressman David Trone in the race for U.S. Senate.

MSEA is one of the most powerful organizations in state politics.  The state union and its local affiliates wield the mighty Apple Ballot, perhaps the most important endorsement in Montgomery County and a significant factor in elections elsewhere in Maryland.  MSEA deserves a large share of the credit in getting Governor Wes Moore nominated in the 2022 Democratic primary by just 2 points over Tom Perez.  Since this is a federal race, the National Education Association – MSEA’s parent union – must approve its recommendation to make the endorsement official.

This is a huge boost for the Trone campaign.

ICYMI: MSEA Recommends Trone for Endorsement

Following the Association’s annual convention, educators from the state’s largest union overwhelmingly support Rep. Trone for U.S. Senate

Gaithersburg, Md. –  Today, the Maryland State Education Association (MSEA) announced that they have forwarded their recommendation for the endorsement of Rep. David Trone (MD-06) to the National Education Association.

Following their annual convention last month, educators from across the state overwhelmingly supported Trone in his run for U.S. Senate. MSEA, the largest union in the state of Maryland, represents more than 75,000 education professionals statewide.

“David Trone is willing to roll up his sleeves and do the hard work to deliver for our educators, but most importantly, he’s ready and willing to hear our concerns and take action to help us at a moment’s notice” – MSEA President Cheryl Bost

Statement from Rep. David Trone:

“I couldn’t be more honored that the hard-working women and men of the Maryland State Education Association, representing 75,000 Maryland educators, voted to recommend my endorsement in the US Senate race. As the child of a public school teacher, I’ve seen the sacrifices that our educators make firsthand, and I understand the passion and commitment that they bring to educating a new generation of Americans and empowering them to live their dreams.”

“Maryland educators and families deserve a Senator who will fight for them. In the Senate, I’ll work to expand federal investments in everything from school construction to special education programs. I’ll fight to increase per-pupil funding, expand mental health support programs in our schools, and give our school districts the resources to hire, train, and retain talented educators and support staff.”

Trone’s campaign continues to build momentum in the U.S. Senate race in Maryland. He has previously announced the endorsements of over 100 elected officials from across the state and the country. MSEA joins other powerful labor organizations, including IBEW Locals 24 and 307 and SMART in their support of Rep. Trone.

About David Trone

David Trone has served Maryland’s 6th District in Congress since 2019, where he has helped lead the fight for progressive priorities like raising the minimum wage, fighting the addiction and mental health crises, and reforming our systemically racist criminal justice system.

In Congress, he’s established a track record of getting things done. He founded the Bipartisan Mental Health and Substance Use Task Force, which passed 26 bills into law in the 117th Congress. And as a member of the Black Maternal Health Caucus, he works to tackle important — but too often ignored — issues that are impacting Maryland families.

Prior to entering public service, David had a successful career in business, founding Total Wine & More, the largest independent wine and spirits retailer in the country, headquartered in Bethesda. Today, David lives in Potomac, Maryland with his wife June. They have four adult children and one grandchild.
