Police Chief Marcus Jones, who has served in the Montgomery County Police Department (MCPD) for decades and has been chief since 2019, has announced his retirement.

This is a big event for the county and I will have more to say about the search for the next chief soon.  But first, a word about Chief Jones.  He is a steady and professional public servant who deserves the respect of the public.  While he has struggled with the same staffing challenges that most local police departments face, he has been honest about them and has tried hard to make progress.  (The $20,000 signing bonus for recruits was a positive step.)  He has also tried to balance police reforms, some mandated by the county council and the state, with the need to fight crime.  Chief Jones will be remembered as doing the best he could in trying times.
