Will Milam, a Poolesville resident who recently retired as the Chief Assistant Sheriff in Prince George’s County, has announced his campaign kickoff for Montgomery County Sheriff.  Milam will be challenging incumbent Sheriff Maxwell Uy, who is finishing his first term.

On his website, Milam writes: “I am running for Montgomery County Sheriff because the Sheriff’s Office is broken. Morale is low, Deputy Sheriffs are leaving in droves, and essential services provided by the Sheriff’s Office are inadequate and threaten the public safety of our community. I bring to this race over 20 years of law enforcement experience and a vision to move the Office forward.”  That view is similar to the perspective of MCGEO, the union that represents employees of the sheriff’s office.  Uy has called such criticisms “misleading and inaccurate.”  He has claimed a number of endorsements from elected officials on his website, including that of State’s Attorney John McCarthy (the county’s elected prosecutor), so this could be a real race.

The sheriff’s office handles important public safety functions related to domestic violence, courthouse security, service of summons and warrants, transporting inmates, responding to 911 calls and handling evictions.  Its condition is critical to the well-being of county residents.

Montgomery County, MD – Will Milam, Poolesville resident, and 22-year law enforcement veteran, will announce his candidacy for Montgomery County Sheriff on Saturday, September 6th at 3pm at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park, located at 506 South Frederick Avenue Gaithersburg, MD 20877.

The public is invited to attend the announcement and hear Will’s plan to strengthen the Office and its service to the County when elected Sheriff. The Democratic Primary is scheduled for June 23, 2026, and Milam has entered the race because he has a vision to improve and enhance public safety for County residents.

The challenges before the agency have hindered its ability to be the strong public safety partner and vital resource that residents across the County deserve. Currently, the Office of the Sheriff is critically understaffed, as dozens of deputy sheriffs have departed for retirements or transfers to other law enforcement agencies. The shortage has precipitated a serious shortfall in the essential services provided by the Office. Milam is running to restore the agency as an integral component of the County’s public safety infrastructure.

Milam noted, “As a longtime resident of Montgomery County, I will make sure that we maintain the highest standards of safety for all County residents. It’s time to chart a new, clear, more focused course, and for the Sheriff’s Office to become more engaged in holding domestic abusers accountable, while providing care for those navigating mental health challenges.” Milam continued, “As a father of two middle school students, I understand the importance of supporting student success, and I am committed to partnering with our education community to ensure the Sheriff’s Office plays an active role in helping students thrive.”
