By Adam Pagnucco.
Last month, the Maryland Sierra Club quietly began endorsing federal and state incumbents for reelection. Many of them got the nod but some did not. Who made the cut?
Here are the endorsements in races relevant to MoCo as of October 16.
Statewide
Comptroller: Brooke Lierman
Attorney General: Anthony Brown
See anyone missing? Where is Governor Wes Moore? The state’s two U.S. Senators (Chris Van Hollen and Angela Alsobrooks) are not on the ballot this year. Let’s move on.
Congress
District 4: Glenn Ivey
District 6: April McClain Delaney
District 8: Jamie Raskin
These are all of the U.S. House members who represent parts of MoCo. Delaney needs all the help she can get if the rumors that her predecessor, David Trone, is contemplating a run against her prove true.
State Senator
District 9: Katie Fry Hester
District 14: Craig Zucker
District 15: Brian Feldman
District 16: Sara Love
District 17: Cheryl Kagan
District 18: Jeff Waldstreicher
District 20: Will Smith
Missing from this list are Senators Ben Kramer (District 19) and Nancy King (District 39). King is leading an effort to throw out one of her delegates, Gabe Acevero. More on that below.
Delegates
District 14: Bernice Mireku-North
District 15: Linda Foley
District 15: David Fraser-Hidalgo
District 15: Lily Qi
District 16: Marc Korman
District 17: Julie Palakovich Carr
District 17: Joe Vogel
District 18: Aaron Kaufman
District 18: Emily Shetty
District 18: Jared Solomon
District 19: Vaughn Stewart
District 20: Lorig Charkoudian
District 20: David Moon
District 20: Jheanelle Wilkins
District 39: Gabe Acevero
Here’s who is missing among those who will be or at least could be running for election: Natalie Ziegler and Chao Wu (District 9A), Anne Kaiser (District 14), Sarah Wolek and Teresa Woorman (District 16), Ryan Spiegel (District 17), Charlotte Crutchfield and Bonnie Cullison (District 19), Lesley Lopez and Greg Wims (District 39).
Ziegler and Wu represent a district that is mostly based in northern Howard County. They will have Republican opponents and possibly credible ones. Wolek, Woorman, Spiegel and Wims are appointees who probably have sparse voting records. Then again, Mireku-North is an appointee too. Lopez and Wims are on King’s anti-Acevero team and Acevero is the only endorsee. I bet he loves that!
This is not the end of the story. The Sierra Club wrote, “The Maryland Sierra Club has begun to make endorsement of elected officials with good records on the environment and who are known to be running for reelection to the same office. We are continuing to assess candidates and will be making more endorsements in the coming months.”
The Sierra Club’s brand is one of the most recognized in the world of environmental politics. We will have more when they update their list.
