Last week, mailers promoting State Question 3 began arriving in mailboxes across Maryland. State Question 3 is a constitutional amendment that would repeal a 2022 state court decision that required Maryland congressional districts to be compact and respect natural boundaries as well as boundaries of political subdivisions. Governor Wes Moore and many other state Democrats argue that the question should be passed to allow them to counter Trump-encouraged mid-cycle gerrymandering by GOP state legislatures to retain the latter’s congressional majority.
Fight Back MD, the ballot issue committee responsible for the mailers and other accompanying comms, has so far raised more than $646,000. Its biggest single contributor is the AFSCME Working Families Fund, a section 527 nonprofit that donated $500,000 to the committee.
I will have more on the genesis of this state question and its relevance for Maryland voters soon. In the meantime, this mailer presents the case favoring the question’s passage.
