Joel Rubin Announces Run for Congress in Maryland’s Sixth District

National Security Expert, Progressive Activist, Jewish Community Leader, and Local Elected Official Brings Experience and Lifelong Service

MARYLAND – Today national security expert, progressive activist, Jewish community leader, and local elected official Joel Rubin, who served in a senior role in the Obama Administration’s Department of State, announced he is running to seek the Democratic nomination for Congress in Maryland’s Sixth District.

“My more than two decades of public service have always been about where I can make the most impact – and right now I believe that is in Congress,” said Rubin. “As someone who has worked to stop hate at home and advance our security abroad while improving the quality of life for my neighbors as a local elected official, we need leaders committed to public service who think globally and act locally.

“We face urgent crises and need someone with a proven track record to address these threats. I’ve spent my life in public service advocating for progressive values, building bridges, finding solutions, and protecting our democracy. I’m ready to fight for the Sixth District in Congress.”

Rubin’s campaign team includes veteran consultants who have won races across the country, including Left Hook Strategy for media, Agency for mail, Upswing Research for polling, and Assemble the Agency for digital fundraising.

About Joel

Joel Rubin is a pragmatic progressive who grew up in the Squirrel Hill neighborhood of Pittsburgh, a hub of Jewish activism, surrounded by family, neighbors, and conversation about social justice at the dinner table each night that informed his view of the world and desire to devote his life to public service. Joel also served three terms in municipal government, including as his town’s Vice Mayor, where he was hands-on in helping constituents during the pandemic, and served as an advisor to Senator Bernie Sanders on Jewish community affairs.

Joel is a national security expert, progressive activist, Jewish community leader, and local elected official who served in the Obama Administration as a Deputy Assistant Secretary of State. Motivated by his experience of being a civil servant in the Bush Administration when it went to war in Iraq based on lies, Joel committed himself to peace and helped found what is now J Street, a pro-Israel group that advocates for peace and democracy in the region. He later led the American Jewish Congress to counter antisemitism here in the United States. He also served in the Obama Administration in a senior State Department role, where he led the agency’s work with the House of Representatives.

Joel has no greater title than Dad, and he and his wife of nearly twenty years, Nilmini, live in a multigenerational, multiracial, Jewish-Buddhist household in Montgomery County. They have three daughters, 12, 14, and 16. Joel holds a joint Master’s degree in Public Policy and Business Administration from Carnegie Mellon University and a Bachelor’s degree in Politics from Brandeis University, and was a Peace Corps Volunteer in Environmental Education in Costa Rica. He is a sought-after expert that frequently appears on news programs and in editorial pages worldwide.
