Four former state Democratic Party chairs gathered in Downtown Silver Spring yesterday to support Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks and slam Congressman David Trone.  They also issued a press release signed by six former chairs reiterating their position.  For better or worse, this is the ultimate repudiation by the state’s Democratic establishment of Trone.

The press release is reprinted below.

Six Former State Democratic Party Chairs Condemn Trone’s Negativity In US Senate Campaign

Silver Spring, MD – Six former Chairs of the Maryland Democratic Party – Kathleen Matthews, Terry Lierman, Susie Turnbull, Peter Krauser, Ike Leggett and Yvette Lewis – release the following statement condemning David Trone’s negativity in the U.S. Senate Campaign:

In the upcoming 2024 U.S. Senate election, Maryland Democrats face a critical choice. With Republican Larry Hogan running and Democratic control of the Senate at stake, we must nominate the strongest possible candidate to win this race. As six former chairs of the Maryland Democratic Party who have led over the past decades, we unequivocally believe the candidate with the best chance of defeating Larry Hogan is Angela Alsobrooks. The most recent polling confirms that Angela is the strongest Democrat to take on Hogan in the general election.

We’ve seen over the past two years that Democratic control of the Senate has been essential to delivering on President Biden’s agenda and making meaningful progress for working families. A Republican Senate will mean enactment of a national ban on abortion, an end to affordable healthcare, and climate change denial. It means a flood of far-right, anti-choice judges being confirmed (again) to lifetime appointments on the federal bench.

It is simply wrong to accept that a self-funder is the answer to keeping the Maryland Senate seat blue.  In fact, we need a nominee who can inspire women and voters of all ages and backgrounds.  Angela Alsobrooks has the best record of standing up for a woman’s right to choose.  Her lived experience and record of accomplishments as well as her vision for the future is why this race has turned and the momentum is with her.  And independent polling confirms that Angela’s inspiring message is resonating with Marylanders — she’s beating Larry Hogan by double digits.

As Maryland State Democratic Party chairs, we always have worked to pull the Democratic coalition together at the end of a primary.  David Trone has cast disparaging comments about women, inadvertently uttered racial slurs, and has denigrated public service.  He will be challenged in building the statewide unity that is needed to win in November.  Because the best way to beat Larry Hogan isn’t with a divisive and careless candidate, but rather with someone who has the ability to bring people together, bridge divides, and win tough races – something Angela Alsobrooks has done her entire life.

Angela’s resilience and her ability to connect with voters and build grassroots support is exactly what Democrats need. That’s why she’s on track to win this primary and will defeat Larry Hogan in November.
