By Adam Pagnucco.

Tensions are rising in this year’s U.S. Senate primary as four different public polls have shown Congressman David Trone ahead of Prince George’s County Executive Angela Alsobrooks.  Those polls are:

November: A Trone internal poll of 1,000 likely voters by Hickman Analytics: Trone 41%, Alsobrooks 34%.

December: A poll of 813 likely voters by Blended Public Affairs and lobbying firm Perry, White, Ross & Jacobson LLC: Trone 36%, Alsobrooks 31%.

January: A Trone internal poll of 1,500 likely voters by Hickman Analytics: Trone 45%, Alsobrooks 34%.

February: A poll of 1,000 registered voters by Emerson College, The Hill and DC News Now: Trone 32%, Alsobrooks 17%.

These polls have a strong caveat: they reflect months of TV and mail by Trone with no response by Alsobrooks.  That is starting to change because Alsobrooks has launched her first TV ad.  It’s also noteworthy that Alsobrooks shook up her senior campaign team in December.

Alsobrooks is now going negative in an attempt to raise money, an endeavor in which she trails Trone by almost five to one.  Her recent fundraising email is reprinted below.

Subject Line: the Senate doesn’t need another millionaire

Adam, unlike my multi-millionaire opponent, I can’t write my campaign huge checks at the drop of a hat and spend millions on running TV ads every second of every day.

But what I can do is actually relate to the hardworking Marylanders I’m running to represent.

We don’t need another millionaire in the Senate, Adam. We need more people who understand the challenges working families face every day.

My grassroots team is staring down a multi-millionaire with limitless resources, and I need your help countering his spending advantage to keep from being drowned out. Will you please chip in $25 ASAP so we can get our Maryland-first message in front of voters?

With so many millionaires in the Senate and the House, Adam, it’s no wonder corporations and the ultra-wealthy are thriving while working families are struggling.

Families are struggling to pay off medical debt, get out from under student loans, ensure their kids get a good education, and have enough for groceries every week.

We need more elected officials who understand the struggles folks are facing — otherwise, how can we ever hope to address those struggles and fix those problems?

I’m running for Senate in Maryland because people need someone who can relate to their needs. Can I count on you to support my campaign by making a grassroots donation right away?
