With the elections over, the next big story will of course be the next round of elections.  The primary won’t be held until June 30, 2026, but the maneuvers are already well underway.  An early poll shows a wide open race for county executive and while my sources have picked their top contenders, a lot can happen between now and then.  There will also be county council races, with the District 3 seat opening up, vacated seats by county executive candidates up for grabs and possible challenges to remaining incumbents.  Expect the politics of these races to affect every decision made by county leaders.  That even applies to County Executive Marc Elrich, who is term limited from his current office but has already stated his intention to run for an at-large council seat.

And what decisions will be made by county leaders?  Superintendent Thomas Taylor will submit his first recommended operating budget this month.  The county executive will send over his capital budget amendments in January and his recommended operating budget in March.  Looming over all of this is any mischief from the Trump administration, a prospect that has filled county leaders with dread and has already drawn full-throated resistance from one council member, and budget headaches at the state level.  It’s a full plate of politics, policy and potential calamity.

With that said, on to December!
