Sheriff Maxwell Uy, who has been targeted for defeat by MCGEO and accused by the union of misusing state child support funds, has hit back hard.  In a press release sent to me minutes ago, the sheriff claims that the union is engaged in a “public misinformation campaign,” is resisting necessary staffing changes and is now making “patently false” allegations about the child support money.

Uy’s press release, which is every bit as tough as the union’s, is reprinted below.

SHERIFF MAXWELL C. UY

PRESS RELEASE

(November 4, 2025) Earlier this Fall, the Municipal & County Employees Organization, UFCW, Local 1994 (MCGEO), which represents both deputies and civilian employees in the Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office (MCSO), initiated a public misinformation campaign against me designed to advance its hand-picked candidate in next year’s elections. The genesis for this campaign has its roots in the staffing challenges that all law enforcement agencies continue to confront. As a result of continued staffing pressures, we have made scheduling changes, reassignments and reorganized staffing to expand civilian jobs that need not be performed by sworn deputies. Not surprisingly, these changes have met with resistance from MCGEO.

Most recently, MCGEO’s misinformation campaign falsely claimed that the Sheriff’s Office is violating a long-held Cooperative Reimbursement Agreement (CRA), essentially a grant, that the MCSO has with the Maryland Child Support Administration. The CRA partially funds a limited number of deputies and one civilian employee who are assigned to perform child support enforcement functions for the MCSO. Once again, however, MCGEO makes allegations that are patently false. Nothing in the CRA prohibits deputies from performing non-child support functions provided its recordkeeping of deputies’ work time is properly reflected in any invoicing such that only child support enforcement work is charged to the CRA.

We recently performed an internal audit of CRA records covering a year-long period and determined that there was less than a one-percent (1%) error in such invoicing. In addition, whenever an error in invoicing has been identified, we have promptly corrected it. Further, the MCSO has regularly consulted with the Child Support Administration representatives during the past year to ensure that both its recordkeeping and billing activities are appropriate. MCGEO has no awareness of these activities by the MCSO.

As I have said before, the MCSO continues to ensure that all our constitutional duties are accomplished with professionalism and integrity. I support the hard working men and women of the Sheriff’s Office and remain committed to providing professional law enforcement service to the community.

Sheriff Maxwell C. Uy
