MoCo’s local Republican candidates struggle to reach voters because of a lack of campaign funds. But one GOP politician has never had a problem with that: President Donald Trump. Below is his latest government-funded TV ad, which was seen by countless thousands of people watching the Washington Commanders’ victory over the Seattle Seahawks yesterday.

Let’s bear in mind how many of those viewers feel about Trump. An August poll by Zenith Research found Trump’s approval rating in Maryland at 31 percent. Meanwhile, 67 percent of Marylanders disapproved of his performance. Many Republican candidates would like Trump to go away so they can run on local issues like taxes, schools and public safety, but that’s not happening.
Trump wants every election to be about him because he wants everything to be about him. So if he gets his way, how can underfunded MoCo GOP candidates possibly make headway in getting their message out? Without campaign money, they can’t. And that’s why regardless of the merits of their critiques of county government, it looks like another tough election season for MoCo Republicans.
