Let’s show more geography of bullet voting in the council at-large primary. Today we will look at the Democratic Crescent and Rockville.
The Democratic Crescent, comprised of Bethesda, Cabin John, Chevy Chase, Kensington, Silver Spring Downtown and Takoma Park, is a dark blue, high turnout area that sent Jamie Raskin to Congress. It roughly corresponds to Downcounty.
Bethesda is a high turnout, affluent area that has the second-most Democratic primary voters in the county after Rockville. David Blair defeated Marc Elrich in the county executive primary here.
Chevy Chase is next door to Bethesda and resembles it demographically. It is also a high turnout area coveted by politicians. Blair defeated Elrich here.
Potomac is distinguished from Bethesda and Chevy Chase by its large Asian population. Blair defeated Elrich by 25 points here.
Silver Spring Downtown is very progressive and voted for Elrich over Blair by 17 points.
Takoma Park is an incorporated city where Elrich was a city council member for 19 years. He defeated Blair here by 36 points and Hans Riemer finished second.
Rockville is the county seat and is both racially and economically diverse. It has more Democratic primary voters than any other local area in the county. Blair won Rockville over Elrich by 1.6 points.
We will finish with racially concentrated precincts in the next post.
