WILL MILAM LAUNCHES CAMPAIGN FOR MONTGOMERY COUNTY SHERIFF BEFORE CROWD OF 150 SUPPORTERS

Montgomery County, MD — Will Milam, a Poolesville resident and 22-year law enforcement veteran, kicked off his campaign for Montgomery County Sheriff on Saturday, September 6, at the Activity Center at Bohrer Park in Gaithersburg, MD, before an enthusiastic crowd of 150 supporters. The Milam campaign also released an initial list of elected officials and community endorsers. The Maryland Gubernatorial Primary Election is scheduled for June 23, 2026.

Milam, a Democrat and early endorsee of UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO—the union representing sworn deputies and civilian employees of the Sheriff’s Office—was lauded by MCGEO President Gino Renne. Renne noted, “Under Sheriff Max Uy, in just two and a half years, more than twenty-five sworn deputies and civilian staff members have left the agency. Our members report harassment, retaliation, and unsafe working conditions.”

Renne continued, “Critical public services are under tremendous strain, and sworn deputies and civilian employees say that Uy’s mismanagement of the department has fueled a workplace crisis that is compromising the safety of Montgomery County residents. The only candidate in this race who has the experience, integrity, and confidence of the employees to lead the Sheriff’s Office out of this catastrophe is Will Milam. Our members, and the people of Montgomery County, deserve and need Will’s leadership.”

Former Maryland Attorney General and Montgomery County State’s Attorney Doug Gansler spoke of the need for a new sheriff when endorsing Milam: “As the former chief law enforcement officer of our county and state for 16 years, I believe that Will is the right person at the right time to lead the Sheriff’s Office and protect the county.”

Human rights activist and former District 18 State Delegate Ana Sol Gutiérrez—the first Latina to serve in the Maryland State Legislature, and the first Salvadoran elected to office in the United States—said while endorsing Milam, “Will Milam will respect and defend the rights of all Montgomery County residents. Montgomery County stands up and fights for fairness and equality for all members of our diverse community, and Will does too.”

While introducing Milam, former County Executive Isiah “Ike” Leggett affirmed, “Will Milam is the candidate who embodies all the essential attributes of a great leader. He is professionally well-qualified for the position of Sheriff in Montgomery County, with more than 20 years of leadership in public safety.” Leggett continued, “This experience, combined with his vision, will transform the office into one of the best in the nation. His community service as a coach and mentor to youth in our community is an essential component of his values and commitment to our county’s future. I wholeheartedly endorse Will for Sheriff.”

As he addressed the assembled crowd, Milam thanked his supporters and said, “The Montgomery County Sheriff’s Office needs strong leadership and a clear vision to guide its future. I am running for Sheriff because this office should lead on the public safety issues that matter to our community. Together, we will hold domestic abusers accountable, take a proactive approach in addressing mental health, and have a meaningful impact on the lives of young people across the county.”

Milam concluded, “I believe the Sheriff’s Office can once again be a reliable component of the county’s public safety infrastructure. With the right vision and leadership, we will create an office that not only meets the challenges of today, but prepares for the public safety needs of tomorrow.”
