UFCW Local 1994 MCGEO, which represents most non-MCPS county employees, has released its endorsement list. MCGEO is the last of the large county employee unions to endorse.
The big news here is that the union is not endorsing a candidate for county executive. I thought Council Member Andrew Friedson had a shot at this endorsement because he has been endorsed by MCGEO’s allies in the fire fighters and police and he sponsored a pension governance bill that was important to all three unions. However, Council Member Will Jawando was the loudest voice in protecting the unions’ collective bargaining agreements this budget cycle and I’m sure all of labor noticed. In the end, I see this as a win for Jawando, who has earned a lot of union support and now sees the last big remaining player denied to his rivals.
